Three Kinds of Canadian Traveller, Three Ways to See India's Golden Triangle
Ask ten people from Canada why they want to visit India and you will hear ten answers: the Taj Mahal, a family connection to rethink, a yoga retreat, a bucket-list birthday, a stopover that grew into a real trip. What they share is a practical problem. India is far, leave is limited, and nobody wants to spend precious days figuring out logistics.
The classic Golden Triangle Tour India route solves much of that. Delhi, Jaipur and Agra form a loop, so you land, travel and fly home from the same city. To show how flexible it is, here are three imagined travellers (not real guests, just examples) and the itinerary that would suit each one best.
Traveller One: "I Only Have a Few Days"
Picture someone from Calgary or Ottawa with a short window between work commitments. They want the big three cities and nothing complicated.
For them, the shortest routes make sense. The 3 days Golden Triangle tour is the fastest version, and the 4 days Golden Triangle tour adds a little room. The compromise is honest: you will see the headline sights, but a good part of each day is spent on the road, because Delhi to Jaipur alone takes about 5 hours.
A tip for this type of trip is to let a private guide manage the timing. With your own car, you can start when you are ready, which matters when your body clock is still on Eastern or Pacific time.
Traveller Two: "This Is My First Time in India"
Now imagine a couple from Toronto who want to see the famous sights properly, without sprinting. They would look at the 5 days Golden Triangle tour or the 6 days Golden Triangle tour, and if they can spare a little more, the 7 days Golden Triangle tour or the 8 days Golden Triangle tour.
The longer versions are where the trip stops feeling like a checklist. Jaipur gets extra time for a flower and vegetable market, the aarti at Govind Dev Ji Temple and workshops, and the road to Agra includes Chand Baori and Fatehpur Sikri. The 8-day tour is listed from $150 per adult.
What would they see? Here is a quick tour of the three cities.
Delhi, in Brief
Delhi blends two moods. Old Delhi is lively, with Chandni Chowk and the Jama Masjid, while New Delhi is more spacious, around India Gate and the Parliament and President's House areas. Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar are UNESCO-listed, and the Lotus Temple and Lodhi Gardens round out a full day. Two reads help: Humayun's Tomb and the Red Fort and the comparison of Lotus Temple or Akshardham.
Jaipur, in Brief
The sights here are palaces and forts. Amber Fort dates to the 16th century and overlooks Maota Lake, Hawa Mahal is the familiar facade, and the City Palace stands next to Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO site of stone astronomical instruments. Read up on Hawa Mahal, Amber Fort and the City Palace, and consider our list of what to buy in Jaipur before you shop.
Agra, in Brief
The Taj Mahal is visited around 6:30 AM at sunrise. A note from our tour pages: winter fog can hide the monument, so ask about timing if you travel in those months. The same day typically covers Agra Fort, Itmad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj), marble inlay and Zardozi workshops, and sunset at Mehtab Bagh. Stories to read first: the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.
Traveller Three: "I Want Culture and Calm"
The third traveller, say from Vancouver, wants monuments but also hopes to slow down, perhaps with yoga, the river and a bit of nature. This is where Rishikesh comes in.
Rishikesh sits in the Himalayan foothills along the Ganges. The 7 days Golden Triangle tour with Rishikesh covers Delhi, Jaipur and Agra first, then a drive of about 5 hours from Delhi to Rishikesh. There you get a full day: morning yoga, Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula, the Beatles Ashram, optional waterfall hikes and the evening Ganga Aarti. Rafting is optional and not included in the price. It is listed from $335 per adult.
If temples matter most, the 8 days Golden Triangle tour with Rishikesh, Haridwar and Mathura adds Mathura's temples and Haridwar's Har Ki Pauri, from $368 per adult. A more compact alternative is the 6 days Golden Triangle tour with Rishikesh, listed from $306. Keep in mind that the return to Delhi is another drive of around 5 hours, so the Rishikesh option works best with six or more days.
And If You Want Even More
Some travellers, of course, fit none of these types. If you would like to extend into Rajasthan, there are options such as the 7 days tour with Jodhpur, the 8 days tour with Udaipur, the 9 days tour with Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer and the 11 days tour with Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Pushkar. The 6 days tour with Mandawa adds a day trip from Jaipur to Mandawa's fort and frescoed havelis.
What Is Included, and What Is Not
Whichever traveller you resemble, the basics stay similar across our private tours. You get a private guide, a private air-conditioned car, pickup and drop-off at your hotel or the airport, and bottled water on board. Hotel accommodation is arranged only if you choose it. Meals, monument entrance fees and gratuities are separate, and entrance fees are paid at the sites. On the 8-day tour page, guides are available in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Hindi and Russian, which is handy for travellers from Quebec who would rather tour in French.
Another point worth knowing: sample itineraries are flexible. If a stop does not appeal, tell us early and we can talk through alternatives.
Practical Notes for Anyone Flying from Canada
This section reflects general travel knowledge rather than our tour pages, so verify details with official sources.
- Visa: Canadian citizens need a visa. An e-Visa has been offered, but check the official portal for current rules.
- Time zones: India is about 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead of Eastern Time and 12.5 to 13.5 hours ahead of Pacific Time.
- Health and insurance: Visit a travel clinic and arrange insurance well in advance.
- Money: Meals, entrance fees and gratuities are not included in our tours.
- Payment: A 50% deposit confirms the booking, with the balance due on day one.
Choosing Yours
You do not have to be any of the three travellers above. The point is that the Golden Triangle bends to your time, your energy and your interests. Many people begin by imagining the perfect trip and then discover it is a week shorter than their leave allows, or a week longer. Working backwards from the days you actually have is the easier route. Start with the number of days you can spare, then decide whether you want extra culture, extra calm or extra Rajasthan.
