My Jaipur Travel Review: Exploring the Pink City with Hii Stories
My first-person experience discovering Jaipur’s forts, markets, food, crafts and local culture
Why Jaipur Was High on My India Travel List
I had seen countless pictures of Jaipur before visiting, but seeing the Pink City in person was a completely different experience. I wanted to explore more than just the famous monuments, so I planned my visit around a mix of sightseeing, local markets, food, art and everyday city life.
I used the Jaipur destination guide from Hii Stories to explore the different experiences available.
What attracted me most about Jaipur was the variety. In a single trip, I could experience:
- Royal forts and palaces
- Colourful old-city streets
- Traditional markets
- Local handicrafts
- Rajasthani food
- Cafes and coffee spots
- Art and craft experiences
- Local shopping
- Cultural activities
That combination made Jaipur feel much more interesting than a simple sightseeing stop.
My First Impression of the Pink City
Jaipur has a personality of its own.
The architecture immediately caught my attention, but what stayed with me was the atmosphere around it. The streets were full of activity, shops were packed with colourful products, and there was always something happening around the next corner.
I particularly enjoyed moving between the major attractions and the smaller experiences around the city.
Some of my favourite parts were:
- Walking through the old city
- Looking at traditional architecture
- Exploring local bazaars
- Browsing handicraft shops
- Watching artisans work
- Trying regional food
- Finding interesting cafes
- Taking time away from the busiest tourist areas
For me, these smaller moments made Jaipur feel more personal.
Exploring Jaipur's Royal Side
Of course, I couldn't visit Jaipur without seeing its famous royal landmarks.
The city has an incredible collection of forts, palaces and historic buildings. My sightseeing included some of the places that make Jaipur so recognizable:
- Amber Fort
- Hawa Mahal
- Jal Mahal
- City Palace
- Historic areas of the Pink City
Amber Fort was one of my highlights. The scale of the complex and the surrounding landscape made it feel completely different from the other attractions I visited.
Hawa Mahal was another place I was excited to see. I had seen photographs of its distinctive facade many times, but standing in front of it gave me a much better appreciation for its design.
Jal Mahal was a different experience altogether. I enjoyed stopping there, taking photographs and simply looking at the palace surrounded by water.
I Didn't Want My Jaipur Trip to Be Only About Monuments
This was probably the biggest reason I enjoyed Jaipur so much.
I didn't want to spend the entire day moving from one famous landmark to another. I wanted to understand what makes the city interesting when you look beyond its tourist attractions.
I spent time exploring:
- Local bazaars
- Shopping streets
- Small independent stores
- Traditional craft shops
- Neighborhoods around the old city
- Local food spots
- Cafes
- Artisan workshops
The city felt much more alive when I slowed down and paid attention to these details.
I also found that shopping wasn't simply about buying souvenirs. Seeing how some traditional products are created made the experience much more meaningful.
My Jaipur Shopping Experience
Jaipur is a fantastic place for anyone who enjoys shopping.
I came across plenty of colourful textiles, jewellery, handicrafts and traditional products while exploring the markets.
The shopping experiences I found particularly interesting included:
- Gem and jewellery shopping
- Textiles
- Traditional handicrafts
- Block-printed products
- Decorative items
- Handmade souvenirs
One experience that stood out to me was seeing traditional craft techniques up close.
Instead of simply looking at a finished product in a shop, I could understand some of the work behind it. That gave me a completely different appreciation for Jaipur's artistic traditions.
If shopping is one of your priorities, I would recommend checking the Jaipur Shopping Tour from Hii Stories before planning your visit.
Discovering Jaipur Through Art and Crafts
The artistic side of Jaipur surprised me.
Before visiting, I mainly associated the city with forts, palaces and colourful streets. Once I explored further, I realized how strongly traditional craftsmanship is connected to everyday life here.
I came across experiences involving:
- Block printing
- Gem cutting
- Textile work
- Handicrafts
- Traditional decorative arts
- Artisan workshops
Watching craftsmen work gave me a better understanding of how much patience goes into these products.
For me, this was one of the most memorable parts of exploring Jaipur because I wasn't simply looking at an object. I was learning about the skill and tradition behind it.
What I Ate During My Jaipur Visit
Food was another major part of my experience.
I didn't want to eat only at places designed for tourists, so I tried to include both traditional food and more modern dining experiences.
Some of the things I explored included:
- Rajasthani thalis
- Pyaaz kachori
- Local snacks
- Lassi
- Traditional sweets
- Modern cafes
- Specialty coffee
- Rooftop dining
I enjoyed the contrast between traditional Rajasthani flavours and the newer cafes and restaurants around the city.
The food gave me another way to experience Jaipur, especially when combined with exploring different neighbourhoods.
Jaipur's Cafe Culture Was a Pleasant Surprise
I wasn't expecting Jaipur to have such an interesting cafe scene.
After spending hours walking around forts and markets, sitting down somewhere quiet with a coffee was exactly what I needed.
I found different types of places, including:
- Heritage-style cafes
- Rooftop cafes
- Specialty coffee shops
- Modern restaurants
- Relaxed neighbourhood spots
These breaks were actually some of my favourite moments because they gave me time to slow down between sightseeing activities.
If you're interested in exploring this side of the city, the Hii Stories Jaipur cafe guide is worth checking.
A Stay That Matched Jaipur's Royal Character
Another thing I noticed while researching Jaipur was the impressive selection of luxury hotels.
The city has some remarkable properties, particularly for travellers who want their accommodation to feel connected to Rajasthan's royal atmosphere.
Two names that stood out to me were:
- The Oberoi Rajvilas
- Rambagh Palace
The Oberoi Rajvilas Jaipur guide gives a good idea of what makes the property special.
I was equally interested in the history surrounding Rambagh Palace. The Rambagh Palace Jaipur guide helped me understand why it remains one of Jaipur's most recognizable luxury properties.
Exploring Jaipur as Part of the Golden Triangle
One thing I liked about Jaipur was its location within India's famous Golden Triangle.
The city connects naturally with:
- Delhi
- Agra
- Jaipur
This makes it easy to include Jaipur in a broader India itinerary.
I personally liked the contrast between the three cities. Delhi offered a mixture of historic and modern India, Agra focused heavily on Mughal heritage, while Jaipur brought a strong Rajasthani character through its forts, markets, crafts and royal architecture.
If you're planning all three destinations, the Golden Triangle tour collection from Hii Stories is a useful starting point.
Jaipur Experiences I Would Recommend
If I had to narrow down my Jaipur experience, these would be at the top of my list:
- Visit Amber Fort
- See Hawa Mahal
- Stop at Jal Mahal
- Explore the Pink City's old streets
- Spend time in local markets
- Look for traditional handicrafts
- Experience local art and crafts
- Try authentic Rajasthani food
- Visit a few independent cafes
- Explore Jaipur's jewellery and textile shops
- Learn about local artisan traditions
- Leave some free time instead of filling every hour with sightseeing
That last point made a bigger difference than I expected.
Jaipur Tours I Found Interesting
While planning my trip, I noticed that Jaipur can be explored in several different ways depending on how much time you have.
Some options include:
- Jaipur full-day tour with Jal Mahal
- Jaipur 2-day city tour
- Jaipur tour for couples
- Jaipur shopping tour
- Jaipur tour with Amber Fort experience
- Golden Triangle tour including Jaipur
I liked having different options because not everyone travels at the same pace.
Jaipur's Position Between Other Rajasthan Destinations
Another reason I would consider returning to Jaipur is its connection to other parts of Rajasthan.
From Jaipur, travellers can continue towards places such as:
- Ranthambore
- Jodhpur
- Udaipur
This makes the city useful not only as a destination itself but also as a starting point for a longer Rajasthan journey.
For example, someone interested in wildlife could continue towards Ranthambore, while travellers looking for more royal architecture and historic cities could extend their trip towards Jodhpur or Udaipur.
My Honest Take on Jaipur
My biggest takeaway from Jaipur was that the city cannot really be understood through monuments alone.
The forts and palaces are impressive, but I found myself remembering other things too:
- The colours of the markets
- Conversations with local people
- Traditional crafts
- Street food
- Quiet cafe breaks
- Jewellery and textile shops
- The atmosphere of the old city
- Watching artisans work
Those experiences gave me a better sense of Jaipur beyond the usual tourist checklist.
Would I Recommend Visiting Jaipur?
Absolutely.
I think Jaipur works particularly well for first-time visitors to Rajasthan because there is so much variety packed into one destination.
You can spend one morning exploring a historic fort, an afternoon shopping for handicrafts, an evening trying Rajasthani food and another day discovering cafes and local neighbourhoods.
For me, that variety is what makes Jaipur special.
I arrived expecting a city of forts and palaces. I left remembering the markets, crafts, food, people and little discoveries just as much as the famous landmarks.
If you're planning your own visit, I'd recommend using the Jaipur destination page from Hii Stories as a starting point and then building your itinerary around the experiences that genuinely interest you.
